While winter storm Jonas appears to have kept many filmgoers on the east coast at home this weekend, The Revenant nevertheless rode its wave of Oscar-nominated buzz to the top of the North American box office.
The film — whose 12 noms include Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor — finished the weekend with an estimated $16 million. The Revenant’s current domestic total stands at $119.2 million and $223.6 million worldwide.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens landed in second place with $14.3 million. As the highest-grossing film of all time in North America (not adjusted for inflation), The Force Awakens has so far earned $879.3 million at home and over $1.9 billion worldwide.
