If there’s one Star Wars character that deserves his own ongoing series, it’s Darth Vader. One year ago today, Marvel launched the notorious Sith Lord’s solo comic, and the results, as Vader would say, have been most impressive.
The series, aptly titled Darth Vader, helps bridge the gap between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, which, on paper, doesn’t sound like much time to tell new stories. But writer Kieron Gillen and artist Salvador Larroca (and the rest of the Marvel Star Wars comics team) have proved that there’s plenty of room for untold adventures between movies. In Vader’s case, the first several weeks after the Death Star’s destruction were… brutal, to say the least. Well, brutal for anyone who crossed Vader’s path anyway.
