Following a weak box office opening for The Divergent Series: Allegiant, a source reported Lionsgate will cut the budget for Ascendant, the final film in the series.
“The budget for the next one will be reduced,” a source told The Hollywood Reporter. According to that source, “they haven’t said by how much,” though it’s expected at least several million dollars will be slashed from the film’s budget. Allegiant’s budget was set at $110 million.
Despite being the lowest opening weekend for the Divergent franchise, Lionsgate still plans to release Ascendant alongside two huge summer box office films—Paramount’s World War Z 2 and Universal’s The Mummy reboot. All three films are slated to debut on June 9, 2017.
