That’s according to Microsoft, which commented on the monthly NPD report that we’ll see next week. Like its comment on July’s report, it referred to Xbox One as the “best-selling console in the US,” leaving open the door that the 3DS was the overall top seller, as was the case during July. We’ll update this story as we receive more details.
August witnessed the release of the Xbox One S, a 4K and HDR-capable version of the Xbox One. Although it’s not advertised as doing so, it also provides performance improvements in certain games. It’s possible sales of the PS4, meanwhile, were depressed as people waited to hear about new versions of the console. Rumors (and a whole lot more) circulated about a redesigned console, and we already knew a more powerful version was also on the way. The slim PS4 and PS4 Pro were both announced yesterday.
Microsoft’s statement on the NPDs echoed the sentiment it’s been sharing on places like Twitter since yesterday. “Thanks to our fans and their excitement for new Xbox One games and the recently launched Xbox One S, which is the only console available this holiday with built-in UHD 4K Blu-ray, 4K video streaming, and HDR for video and gaming, Xbox One was the best-selling console in the U.S. in August,” Xbox marketing boss Mike Nichols said. The PS4 Pro notably lacks UHD 4K Blu-ray support.
Nichols also used a Verizon-esque line about Xbox Live being the fastest network, something it began boasting about in an Xbox Wire post today.
“In addition, we continue to see strong engagement on Xbox Live–the fastest, most reliable gaming network–with total global gaming hours on Xbox One consoles increasing 42 percent year-over-year,” Nichols said. “We’ve also received an incredible response to Xbox Design Lab, which saw millions of visits to the site and hundreds of thousands of designs created by fans.”
September should prove to be an interesting month with Sony launching the slim PS4 for $300. That will then be followed by the launch of the Pro in November for $400. The next Xbox, known as Project Scorpio, launches during holiday 2017.
We’ve followed up with Sony and Nintendo for comments regarding the August NPD report. We’ll update this story with any details we receive.
