The small-screen adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, which serves to fill in backstory for the upcoming film, is based on the fourth book in the series, Wizard and Glass.
According to EW, the book was chosen because its mostly a prequel for the rest of the epic, filling in the earlier details on the life of gunslinger Roland Deschain.
Both the film and television series see Idris Elba taking on the role of Roland. Sony Pictures will finance both the series pilot and “a full run of between 10 and 13 episodes.” The show will hopefully premiere in 2018, “around the time the film becomes available on cable or streaming services,” EW reports.
Matthew McConaughey, who plays The Man in Black in the upcoming movie, hasn’t been nailed down for any appearances in the television series. However, EW said his “involvement is a possibility.”
