HBO’s new sci-fi/western Westworld is inspired in part by video games. Now, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has spoken out to say some of the ideas from Westworld about the design philosophy of the futuristic park are the same as what he’s going after when designing games.
He said he watched Westworld‘s second episode and connected with a line that Anthony Hopkins’ character, Dr. Ford, said about why people are drawn to Westworld.

Dr. Ford, who created Westworld and all of its inhabitants, says (via IGN):
“They come back because of the subtleties, the details. They come back because they discover something they imagined well-known they haven’t noticed before. Something they fall in love with. They are not looking for the story that tells them who they are. They already know who they are. They are here because they wanted a glimpse of who they could be.”
This line of thinking mirrors the way in which Kojima thinks about game design, he said.
Westworld is inhabited by robots known as hosts, who are essentially NPCs. People travel to the park to live out their fantasies and do things they could not achieve in the real world. The same can be said for video games in some cases.

Kojima’s next game is Death Stranding, which is exclusive on console to PlayStation 4 and is also coming to PC. Little is known about the game, but earlier this year, Kojima suggested it could come out in 2018. It might also feature a female hero and an online mode.
According to Kojima, Death Stranding will be the best game he’s ever made and he’s confident that he will not have to make compromises.
