Last week it was reported that DC’s The Flash had lost its second director, potentially delaying the release of the superhero adventure. Now star Ezra Miller has commented on Rick Famuyiwa’s departure and how it will affect the movie.
Speaking to Collider, Miller admitted that from the outside, losing two directors within a few months of each other did make it seem like the film was in trouble.
“These processes are complicated, and I think it can–from afar–appear to be something interpersonal or dramatic,” he said. “These are groups of people taking the development of projects extremely seriously, and the teams are changing all the time. There’s often a lot of flux in who the team of the production of a film is before that production starts, and in this case, you hear about it, because it’s a critical figure–the directors that have been coming on and leaving.”
Nevertheless, Miller confirmed that the project was still moving forward. “For me, it’s sort of a tragic relay race,” he said. “We’ve had a couple of really incredible people carry this baton, and their marks are left on that baton, and the work that they’ve given to the project will certainly be represented in whatever the final product comes to be.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Famuyiwa quit The Flash over “creative differences” with Warner. Famuyiwa was announced as director in June this year, replacing Seth Grahame-Smith who exited a month earlier.
In a statement, Famuyiwa said: “When I was approached by Warner Bros. and DC about the possibility of directing The Flash, I was excited about the opportunity to enter this amazing world of characters that I loved growing up, and still do to this day.
“While it’s disappointing that we couldn’t come together creatively on the project, I remain grateful for the opportunity. I will continue to look for opportunities to tell stories that speak to a fresh generational, topical, and multicultural point of view.”
The Flash will star Miller as Barry Allen, with Billy Crudup and Kiersey Clemons also cast. It is currently scheduled for a May 2018 release, but THR reports that production is now unlikely to start in March 2017 as originally planned.
If the movie does move back in DC’s schedule, it is possible that Ben Affleck’s Batman film could take its place. Last month actor Jeremy Irons, who plays Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred in DC’s movies, suggested that Affleck’s film could start production next summer.
