New Star Wars Comic to Focus on Darth Maul Before Phantom Menace

Darth Maul‘s early days are set to be explored in a new comic book series from writer Cullen Bunn (Uncanny X-Men) and artist Luke Ross (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), USA Today reports.

The series will follow Maul as he’s trained by Darth Sidious, who won’t allow the young Sith to confront any Jedi. This pushes Maul to look for other avenues to test his skills, eventually leading him to Eldra Kaitis, a young Jedi Padawan who’s been captured by a crime lord. This reveals itself as an opportunity for Maul to test himself but also possibly turn Eldra over to the dark side of the Force.

Bunn told USA Today that Eldra “has a huge impact on Maul’s life going forward” and promises that he’ll show more of the Sith’s relationship with Sidious. Bunn describes Sidious as “not a very warm teacher” and adds that he’s devoted time to the struggle between Sith and Jedi and the fine line between the both of them.

“A big part of the story is Darth Maul’s descent to the dark side and almost being tempted away from it,” he said.

The five-issue series is set to start in February 2017.
