Fantastic Beasts Dethrones Doctor Strange at the Box Office

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them had a strong first weekend at the domestic box office, debuting in first place with $75 million.

As noted by Variety, this first installment in a new five-part film series from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling boasted a sizable production budget of $180 million. While its opening weekend doesn’t quite match those of the Harry Potter films, Fantastic Beasts met Warner Bros.’ expectations.

“This is dead on what we were looking for,” Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein said, noting that Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts are two different franchises, and comparing the two would be like comparing “apples and kumquats.” For our thoughts on the film, read IGN’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them review.
