The Obamas Sign With Netflix To Makes TV Shows And Movies-Watch Out, Ryan Murphy

Chalk another one up for Netflix. The streaming service has landed two more high-profile names in producing deals. This time, it’s former President Barack and Michelle Obama.

The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which says the duo have agreed to a multiyear deal with the streaming giant, which will see them produce a variety of original content, including scripted shows, documentaries, and movies. They join a number of other big names to sign with Netflix, including American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes, who has shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal to her name.

“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” the president says in a statement. “That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix–we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”

The former first lady adds, “Barack and I have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others. Netflix’s unparalleled service is a natural fit for the kinds of stories we want to share, and we look forward to starting this exciting new partnership.”

The exact terms of Netflix’s deal with the Obamas have not been announced. However, it’s worth THR’s report that Murphy’s agreement with the streamer is believed to be worth up to $300 million for the creator.

As for when to expect content from the Obamas to start arriving, chances are you’ll have to wait a while. No shows or movies have been announced at this point. In the meantime, there are literally hundreds of Netflix originals for you to watch instead.
