Funimation has announced the upcoming Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie will release in U.S. and Canadian theaters on January 16, 2019. The world premier of the film’s English dub will take place on December 13 in an exclusive showing at the Historic TCL Chinese Theater.
“We’re thrilled to finally share the official opening date of Dragon Ball Super: Broly with fans since first announcing the acquisition in July,” said Funimation CEO Gen Fukunaga. “From its updated art style to the assembly of canon characters new and old, Dragon Ball Super: Broly is sure to please fans. Creator Akira Toriyama’s imagination and masterful storytelling truly shine through in this exciting new movie.”
Dragon Ball Super: Broly marks the 20th film in the Dragon Ball franchise, and the first that’s a part of the Super series. The movie follows the events of the Dragon Ball Super anime and pits Super Saiyans Goku and Vegeta against Broly, one of the most powerful villains the two have ever faced. The film will also further explore the Saiyan race.
Dragon Ball has found an immense following in the west. The last film in the franchise, 2015’s Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, grossed $8 million total in the U.S. and Canada, becoming the first independent movie to be included in the domestic top 10 highest grossing anime films list.
Dragon Ball Super aired for three years, between July 5, 2015 and March 25, 2018. If you want to catch up on the anime before Dragon Ball Super: Broly‘s western premier in January, you can watch the series in its original Japanese on Crunchyroll and in English on Funimation.
